What to say
Stay respectful. Do not argue, resist, or escalate roadside. These short phrases help you assert rights calmly. You must still follow lawful physical instructions from the officer.
"I'm going to reach for my license and registration now. They are in my wallet / glove box."
Announce movements before making them.
"I am providing the documents the law requires. I choose to remain silent about anything else."
You must provide license, registration, and proof of insurance.
"Officer, I do not consent to a search of my vehicle or my belongings."
Say it calmly. Do not physically interfere.
"Am I free to go, or am I being detained?"
If told you are free to go, leave calmly and safely.
"I am going to remain silent. I would like to speak with an attorney before answering further questions."
You must still provide required documents and follow lawful physical instructions.
"Am I free to leave, officer?"
Passengers may ask this at any time.
"I understand. I would like to contact an attorney. I will not answer questions without my lawyer present."
